    Position Summary

    WTNH News 8 is looking for a creative writer who understands the urgency of a 24-7 newsroom environment. The successful candidate will be able to multitask while writing clear, concise, and conversational copy for wtnh.com.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Position Summary:

    The Digital/Online Content Producer writes stories for WTNH digital properties, edits and uploads video, and produces compelling, unique content.

     

    Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Produce digital content for all of News 8's digital platforms, including but not limited to websites, apps, email newsletters, and social media.
    • Excel in breaking news situations, accurately reporting and updating information as it happens online.
    • Work closely with assignment editors, broadcast producers, and newsroom managers to coordinate three-screen synergy (TV, digital, mobile) around news coverage.
    • Identify compelling, unique stories of interest and be a bold voice at editorial meetings to make sure these stories are heard on digital and on air.
    • Use various metrics to identify digital content priority and placement decisions to grow digital audiences.
    • Copy edit content written by others newsroom staff.
    • Teach, coach and mentor talent and other digital contributors on best practices for writing and producing content on their own social platforms.
    • Ability to hit deadlines is a must. While we work as a team, web producers must be able to handle all facets of content production by themselves as if they were working alone.

    Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Strong working knowledge and experience with an online CMS (Knowledge of Lakana is a plus).
    • Strong grasp of posting to various social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube.
    • Excellent reading, writing, spelling, grammar and organizational skills. 
    • Write in a smart, conversational, and shareable manner with a creative format and style.
    • Basic Photoshop and video editing skills
    • Basic HTML knowledge
    • Ability to shoot video for digital platforms a plus 

    Education/Experience:

    Bachelors degree in Communication/Journalism or related degree preferred. Three (3) years minimum experience as a digital news producer or digital journalist preferred. Experience in writing, producing and editing content on a desktop editing system.

     

    Work Environment/Mental/Physical Requirements:

    High stress office environment with deadline pressures. Position will require you to prioritize tasks and multitask daily, and well as manage multiple projects simultaneously with frequent change in direction and priority. Schedule may vary based on breaking news and/or daily news coverage requirements.

    You must be willing and able to work outside of normal business hours, including holidays, early mornings, nights, overnights, and weekends.


    The Online Content Producer must be able to stand, sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.  In addition, the Online Content Producer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.  Repetitive movements are required.  Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.

    Corporate Job description

     

    The Digital Producer leads the transition from broadcast focused newsrooms to multi-platform newsrooms through active daily example; providing training in methods, processes and tactics; as well as in creating/editing origin content beyond that which is produced for on-air.

     

    • Develops and leads winning strategy for station content
    • Expert understanding of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms
    • Reviews copy and will correct errors in content, grammar, and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines
    • Use our Social Media and Website to build and reinforce brand recognition and drive viewers to television
    • Determines a story's emphasis, length, and format, and organizes material accordingly
    • Research and analyze background information related to news stories in order to be able to provide complete and accurate information
    • Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions
    • Pitches on-brand local and trending stories during morning meetings
    • Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts
    • Shoots and edits content for on-air and digital
    • Produces reports for all platforms
    • Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
    • Builds and calendars digital campaigns to promote local shows and specials.
    • Writes stories for the web and other digital platforms
    • Performs other duties as assigned
    • Finds new ways to use Social Media and our website to engage with viewers

     Requirements & Skills:

    • Degree in journalism; daily newspaper or news site experience required; live, working web samples and/or print pages preferred
    • Proficiency in Associated Press style, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Basic HTML preferred
    • CSS, Flash and other relevant technology skills is a plus
    • Maintain positive work environment through active team participation and cooperation with co-workers in all departments
    • Responds positively to feedback

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:
    The Digital Producer must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.  In addition, the Digital Producer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
