    Position Summary

    Nexstar is seeking a Weekend Meteorologist with a compelling on-air presence.  The weekend meteorologist will possess excellent on-air skills in addition to contributing to all our social media platforms.  Candidate will be able to produce news content and perform live shots for newscasts routinely.  Must possess reporting, shooting, writing, and editing abilities. Must have a degree in meteorology or related sciences.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Looking to gain experience in the middle of Tornado Alley? KSNT News is looking for an entry-level meteorologist to participate in our severe weather coverage, learn from our experienced team of broadcast meteorologists, get valuable practice presenting the weather on multiple TV stations, and turn weather and news stories to supplement our newscast content.

    Responsibilities:

    • Present clear, focused and forward-looking forecasts for Saturday, Sunday, and other assigned newscasts, as well as written forecasts for our web and digital properties.
    • Ensure that all weather content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
    • Be active on social media, engaging positively with viewers, including with Facebook Live updates, Twitter posts and Facebook forecasts.
    • Self-report to participate in severe weather coverage, by giving live reports from the field or studio, helping to operate equipment and participating in keeping other team members in the field out of harm’s way.
    • Provide live weather and news reports from the studio and field, as assigned.
    • Pitch weather-related and outdoor stories on a daily basis.
    • Shoot video and interviews, prepare scripts and edit news and weather stories to air in regular newscasts.
    • Respond to breaking and/or severe weather events and other urgent newsrooms situations as required.
    • Record weather updates for radio station partners.
    • Participate in anchoring newscasts and providing context and appropriate conversation during newscasts.
    • Communicate with managers, coworkers and viewers by email and social media.
    • Participate in promotional activities including public appearances.
    • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience.
    • Experience with an internship or position inside a professional broadcast or cable TV station.
    • Experience using social media.
    • On air experience in school or in a professional environment.
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.
    • Flexibility to work any, filling in for sick and vacationing colleagues on the weather team.
    • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
    • Experience using a personal computer, email, word documents and spreadsheets.

    Physical Demands:

     

    The Meteorologist must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.  In addition, the Meteorologist I must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.  Repetitive movements are required.  Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
