    Position Summary

    WCMH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, one of the great cities in America, DMA #34  Seeks a News Director to lead and supervise all aspects regarding the creation, execution and distribution of news, weather, sports programming and special projects, on all platforms, including our primary TV station, dedicated websites, apps and social media sites.  The News Director stays abreast of changes to the industry that affects both media consumers and journalists and has the ability to devise plans to collect and distribute relevant, meaningful content to audiences regardless of platform.



    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Job Description:

    • Manages all aspects of the News Department (other than Production.)
      • Plans and manages staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News Department.
      • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees.
      • Develops news coverage strategy for the station and its website.
      • Critiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
      • Assigns projects to staff and verifies that deadlines are being met.
      • Ensures growth and achievement of viewer rating goals and online engagement metrics.
      • Determines programming and evaluation of equipment needs to produce quality programming.
      • Responds to coverage questions.
      • Works with other senior station leaders or other departments in a collaborative way to establish and reach station goals.
      • Performs other duties as assigned
    • Reports directly to the station’s VP / General Manager


    Requirements & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
      • Fluency in English.
      • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
      • Minimum five years’ experience in news programming production, with at least two years’ experience in a leadership role. (More or less depending on market size.)
      • Experience guiding, directing and motivating subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
      • Experience establishing long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them.
      • Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skills.
      • Experience preparing and maintaining departmental budgets.
      • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
      • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
      • Ability to effectively listen to fully understand employee needs and communicate with a team and individuals to shape solutions
    • Ability to successfully capitalize on fast moving, fluid situations, under time demands and while maintaining a cooperative, positive team effort managing both internal and external department resources.


    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    The News Director must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic communication tools, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.  Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.  Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
