    Position Summary

    KETK and KFXK in Tyler, TX are seeking a part-time Assignment Desk Editor. The ideal candidate will be a news junkie who is passionate about contemporary journalism on multiple platforms. It requires keen instincts, attention to detail and social media proficiency. This is different from the traditional Desk Editor role assigning crews, listening to scanners and making beat calls. You will collaborate with managers, producers, reporters and the digital team to support our daily newsgathering efforts in a variety of ways, including story research, vetting news tips received from the public and helping plan future coverage.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
      * Develop content ideas, considering on-air and digital audience appeal.

      * Establish and develop contacts with key PR people, public information officers, and other newsmakers.
      * Collaborate with reporters and producers on elements
      for their stories and newscasts. 
      Monitor social media for breaking news and other developing stories.

      * Review court documents and online judicial records for story leads.

      * Organize ENPS grid of past, current and future stories, events and enterprise ideas.  

      * Monitor email and answer calls to newsroom



      Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
      * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
      * Curiosity about our community, with the persistence to dig beneath the surface and go beyond the obvious when chasing a story



      Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related subject preferred; some experience in a modern multi-platform newsroom 


      Training/Equipment: Operate newsroom computer system (ENPS). Other digital and video skills a plus.


      Work Environment/Mental/Physical Requirements: Position requires the operation of computer and editing software. High stress environment with deadline pressure. Must be available to work a variety of shifts.
